Village Houses Rainbow Cushion For Handmade Monday

Its been a wet and windy week in these parts, we even had a power cut when some of the rain water leaked in (no doubt driven by the wind) and got into a plug socket! Yesterday though, we were bathed in sunshine, and it was absolutely blissful...

for a while... ha! the great British Summer :)

Thank you for all your lovely comments on last week's Handmade Monday post, i was inspired by your positivity to create two more wild flower plates, and the set is now available on my website, and Etsy shop :)

Wild Flower Side Plates

Village House Cushion

This week my creativity has inspired by buildings... i'm not sure why, perhaps it was after watching all the Jubilee coverage and admiring some of the lovely architecture to be seen in London.

My first make on this theme features the type of village houses that are to be found in my neck of the woods, and a rainbow - in celebration of the sunshine after the rain!

I'm pretty pleased with it on the whole, i like the fabrics i've used for the houses, and the little details like the bud vase in the window...

... but, as you can see, the stitching of the rainbow has caused the linen to stretch and pucker a little. The question is, is the wavy rainbow a happy accident that adds an appealing dimension to the design? or is it a technical fault which means that this cushion is to join the other 'not quite right' cushions that are to be found on the beds, chairs and sofas in my house! I'd love your thoughts :) and don't be shy of letting me know that the latter is the best option, i'm used to the trial and error approach!

I also have another building themed project on the go, but i shall keep that under wraps until next week when hopefully it will be complete! For now though, i will bid you farewell - thank you for visiting :) and do take a look at the other Handmade Monday blogs, there are always lots of lovely things to see!

  1. I don't think that everything should be perfect otherwise why buy handmade? It adds a cetain 3 dimensional aspect to it. The detail is amazing and I love the plates. All good English summer images. Look forward to seeing the next one.

  2. I love the cushion, I don't think it matters about the wavy rainbow at all. Such sweet little houses too!

  5. Linen can be a real swine to work with sometimes, but the stretch does not denigrate from its beauty. Love the plates such a lovely edging :)

  6. Beautiful plates and beautiful cushion too. I don't think the wrinkly rainbow matters at all, just adds to it. xx

  8. Oooh can I risk saying the opposite!!! I actually think the wrinkliness and brightness of the rainbow detracts from the cute houses especially as you have added very thoughtful details to them such as the vase in the window. Hope you don't mind!

  15. Very pretty plates. Not sure about the wibbly rainbow - would have to see it in 'real-life' to decide! Can you not iron / wash it out - I've never worked with linen - so I may be being gormless!!! Lovely cushion still!

  16. I love the plates you've made so pretty. Didn't notice the wrinkly rainbow in the first picture but quite noticable in second. Can you loosen a few stitches in different places to see in it will sit better? Have a lovely week. Ali x

Not so keen on the rainbow, am of the same opinion as fiddly fingers, but then that's just my taste.

  19. Happy accident I think too! To be honest I didn't notice it! Maybe iron-on interfacing on the reverse of the cushion may have helped with this? I'm no sewing expert though! It looks lovely, very pretty!
